NORLIC to Hold Landlord Workshop

The Niagara Orleans Land Improvement Corporation (NORLIC) will host a free workshop on Tuesday, April 11 for landlords to discuss fair housing and its implications for owners and managers for real property in New York State.  The event is being done in conjunction with Housing Opportunities Made Equal (HOME) and the Niagara University Institute for Professional Development.

“April is fair housing month, so this seemed the perfect time to host an event for a discussion with landlords on their roles and responsibility under fair housing laws,” said Niagara County Legislator Chris Voccio, Vice Chairman of NORLIC.   “We think helping people understand the law will lead to better compliance with that law.”

The workshop will cover a host of topics including:

  • Fair Housing Law and Protected Classes
  • Discussion on the Impact of Housing Discrimination
  • How to Avoid Discriminatory Practices
  • Best Practices in Application and Screening Process
  • Reasonable Accommodation and Modification
  • Landlord Rights and Responsibilities
  • Evictions and Small Claims Court

“The mission of NORLIC is to acquire vacant and abandoned properties and return them to productive use, creating a better community for future generations,” said Matthew Chavez, Project Manager for NORLIC.  “Fair housing policy is part of that equation and that is why we want to bring experts together for an open discussion with landlords and property managers.”

The workshop is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11th at the Institute for Professional Development, 616 Niagara Street in Niagara Falls.  Participants may also choose to participate virtually.  Registration is required and can be done at http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07ejq20pyd0c1d53b1&llr=xzmhuxcab
