Permit Information

PISTOL PERMITS CANNOT BE LAMINATED

DEATH OF A PERMIT HOLDER

New York State law requires that upon a permit holder’s death, the decedent’s estate/executor must turn over the decedent’s firearm(s) to another pistol permit holder, a licensed firearm dealer, or the local police department – within fifteen (15) days.
The estate/executor is requested to notify the Niagara County Pistol Permit Office of the permit holder’s passing. The estate/executor should provide a Letter of Testamentary/Administration, a completed Estate Bill of Sale (Forms), a copy of the permit holder’s death certificate and information regarding the disposition of the firearm(s). The decedent’s pistol permit will be cancelled.
NAME CHANGE
The permit holder must appear in person at the Niagara County Pistol Permit Office with proof of the name change – marriage certificate, court order, etc. A fee of $3.00 will be assessed, as well as a $2.00 fee for printing a new card. If you currently hold a paper permit, you will be provided with an updated plastic permit card.
CO-REGISTRATION
Co-registration of handguns is allowed in Niagara County between immediate family members only. Immediate family consists of (including “step”) – mother, father, sister, brother, children, spouse/domestic partner. Co-registrants are NOT required to reside within the same household, but ARE required to reside in Niagara County and hold a valid Niagara County pistol permit. By co-registering, both parties take responsibility for compliance with all NYS firearm laws as well as for the handling, storage and transportation related to firearms.
The “purchaser” of the firearm(s) is, and will always remain, the Primary Owner of the firearm(s) and is the only party allowed to sell/dispose of the co-registered firearm(s). Co-registration does NOT imply/transfer ownership of the co-registered firearm(s). Upon the death of the Primary Owner, all co-registered firearms become the responsibility of the Primary Owner’s estate/will.

IMPORTANT: In the event one of the co-registrants should be arrested, the party being arrested may/will have their permit suspended, revoked, etc and would/could be required to surrender all firearm(s) listed on their permit – even if they are not the Primary Owner. The Primary Owner may/will also be required to surrender/remove those firearm(s) from their permit.
CO-REGISTRATION SHOULD BE CAREFULLY CONSIDERED
