Niagara County Office for the Aging to Host 2 Events as part of Elder Abuse Awareness Month

With the month of June recognized nationally as Elder Abuse Awareness month, Niagara County is hosting two events for local senior citizens to help with abuse awareness and prevention, according to Darlene DiCarlo, Director of the county’s Office for the Aging.

“Our office was awarded a $7,100 grant from Lifespan Rochester to support education and outreach about elder mistreatment during Elder Abuse Awareness Month and beyond,” said DiCarlo.  “We want our seniors to know that should they fall victim to abuse or some scam, they are not alone, they do not need to suffer in silence or feel embarrassed, and that there is help available to them.”

The first event will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 2 at the Dale Association, 33 Ontario Street in Lockport.  Kelly Zunner-Daniels from Lifespan will be speaking on elder abuse.  The event will include free giveaways and a discussion on the resources for seniors from the Niagara County Office for the Aging; Alzheimer's Association; Center for Elder Law and Justice; Eastern Niagara Hospital; Niagara County Adult Protection Services; and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department.

The second event will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 14 at the Lewiston Senior Center, 4361 River Road in Youngstown.  Daniel Lyon from Lifespan will hosting “Name That Scam!”, an interactive music driven presentation using songs from the 50's, 60's, and 70's to discuss the multitude of scams that target senior citizens.
