Lead Action Level Lowering as Poisoning Prevention Efforts Increase

With the increase in awareness of the harmful effects of lead poisoning in children, New York State has lowered the “action level” for confirmed blood lead level in children.  The new action level went into effect October 1st.

Niagara County Department of Health Cites Facilities for Tobacco Sales to Minors

The Niagara County Department of Health and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, under contract with the Department, have been conducting tobacco compliance checks throughout Niagara County since July 1, 1999.  Every facility that sells tobacco to the public will receive a compliance check, including all vending machine operations.

Niagara County Department of Health Receives $2.75 Million Award for Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction and Healthy Homes Interventions

The Niagara County Department of Health has been awarded a Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Program grant in the amount of $2.75 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The original award of $2 million was increased by $750,000--with $500,000 designated for lead hazard reduction and $250,000 designated for other healthy homes interventions.

Niagara County Offers Free Evidence Based Health Workshops

The Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division, in collaboration with the Niagara County Office for the Aging, is offering free workshops throughout Niagara County for individuals with any ongoing health condition; for example, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, pain and high blood pressure.

Niagara County Department of Health Reports Third Rabies Case of 2019

The Niagara County Department of Health has been notified that a bat submitted for rabies testing from Youngstown-Lockport Road in Ransomville (Town of Porter) was confirmed positive for rabies. This is the third rabid animal confirmed in Niagara County this year. The bat had entered a residence and was captured by the homeowner for testing by the Niagara County Department of Health.
