Eligible families can receive cash assistance through federal funding (TANF – Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) for a maximum of 60 months in a lifetime. Single persons, childless couples, and people who have exhausted TANF benefits could qualify for Safety Net Assistance which is funded by the state and local governments. Previously called “welfare,” “ADC, “Home Relief,” or “public assistance,” the program is now generally referred to as “Temporary Assistance.” There is a gross income test for eligibility and more information can be obtained at the state website: http://otda.ny.gov/programs/temporary-assistance/
