The Niagara County Department of Health Nursing Division, in partnership with the NiagaraCounty Office for the Aging is offering free Diabetes Self-Management Workshops throughout NiagaraCounty. There are two workshop series scheduled to begin soon:
- Friday, May 5 at Mount Saint Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston, 1-3:30 pm (complimentary lunch will be served at 12:30 pm). The series continues at the same time every Friday for 6 weeks OR
- Wednesday, May 17 at Elderwood Independent Living, Wheatfield, 1-3:30 pm and the series continues at the same time every Wednesday for 6 weeks.
Each six-week program is for people who have diagnoses of diabetes. The program has demonstrated proven health benefits and complements diabetic medical management people receive from their providers. Participants will enhance skills to maintain active and fulfilling lifestyles by improving problem-solving and decision-making. They will learn to address the challenges of living with diabetes.
Workshop topics also include improving food choices, increasing physical activity, and practicing coping skills to maintain nutrition and a healthy weight.
"This is an evidence based program that helps participants gain control of their own health. We applaud these individuals taking the necessary steps to improve their health." said Daniel J. Stapleton, Niagara County Public Health Director.
