The Niagara County Department of Health is pleased to announce improvements made in our Sexual Health Center (previously referred to as STD/HIV clinic).  “All of these enhancements to our services are designed to reduce stigma, encourage testing and provide the most comprehensive sexual health services possible. Preventing disease will always be our number one priority, and reducing barriers to testing and treatment are one of the most effective approaches to reducing the incidence of disease,” stated Public Health Director, Daniel Stapleton.  The new name will help to remove stigma and encompass the many services offered beyond STD and HIV testing, such as full exams, counseling and referral services. “These improvements support our goals to help end the HIV epidemic, eliminate Hepatitis B and C, and to successfully prevent and control sexually transmitted infections”, stated Kathleen Cavagnaro, Director of Nursing. Here are the highlights of our efforts to provide the best healthcare services to our clients:

  • Rapid HIV testing -  Detect infection as early as 10 days from exposure, results ready in 20 minutes and all it takes is a finger stick.

  • Rapid Hepatitis C testing (HCV) -   Results are ready in 20 minutes and only requires a finger stick (same one can be used for both HIV and HCV)

  • Linkage to care- Partnership with Evergreen Health Services to provide follow-up services to anyone who does not have a physician and is HIV or Hepatitis C positive

  • New laboratory service provider – quicker test results (~ 3 days) for chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis

  • New training – clinic staff have received trauma informed care training for the LGBTQ community

  • Safe Zone designation –The clinic is part of the network of visible allies for the LGBTQ community

  • PrEP clinic (pre-exposure prophylaxis) for prevention of HIV coming soon - Partnership with Trillium Health to offer PrEP services via telemedicine. PrEP treatment includes one daily pill, Truvada, that when taken as prescribed and when used in conjunction with condoms, has an effectiveness rate of more than 95% in preventing HIV for those exposed.

On Wednesday, May 23rd, we will begin offering an express clinic, designed for non-symptomatic clients who just want to stop in, get their routine testing done and be on their way.  Full service clinic days will remain Mondays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The express clinic will operate every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. On World HIV testing Day, Wednesday, June 27th, we will be holding a grand opening event to celebrate these changes, including the addition of our express clinic. Please stop by to see our clinic, spin the wheel for a chance for a prize, and get tested, as everyone should know his or her HIV status.
