LOCKPORT—Boosting government efficiency and cutting redundant costs will take center stage in Lockport tonight, when Niagara County’s newly-formed consolidation committee holds its first meeting, bringing municipal and county government leaders together with experts from the private sector.

The ad hoc Committee on Governmental Shared Services and Consolidation, formed in mid-January, has as its charge exploring redundancies in government services as county, town and city leaders consider options for belt-tightening.  Legislator John Syracuse, R-Newfane, who chairs the newly-created panel, and Niagara County Legislature Public Works Chairman Paul B. Wojtaszek, R-North Tonawanda, said representatives of all the county’s towns and cities are welcome to attend tonight’s meeting.

“There will be no sacred cows when we look at efficiencies,” Wojtaszek explained.  “We owe it to the taxpayers to minimize the cost of government services.  I really look forward to working with elected leaders from our towns and cities to find mutual solutions.”

Syracuse added he wants a “dialogue among equals—equal in our concerns, equal in any solution.”  Syracuse noted the consolidation committee draws members from county government, municipal governments, and the private sector, with a goal of “getting to best practices and real solutions.”
