Niagara County Department of Health and Niagara County Community College Plan Emergency Exercise

Public Health Director Reports First Case of West Nile Virus in Niagara County

Daniel J. Stapleton, Director of the Niagara County Department of Health, reported today the first laboratory-confirmed human case of West Nile Virus in Niagara County for 2013. The affected individual, a young adult male, is recovering at home after being hospitalized for illness clinically consistent with West Nile Virus infection.  The individual resides in Gasport, where it is believed he contracted the virus. To date, Niagara County has reported no West Nile Virus positive mosquito pools, infected birds or positive horses.

NATIONAL LEAD POISONING PREVENTION WEEK – October 20 through 26, 2013

LEAD POISONING IS PREVENTABLE. Protecting children from exposure to lead is important to lifelong good health. Even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to affect IQ, the ability to pay attention and academic achievement. The effects of lead exposure cannot be corrected. The most important step parents, doctors and others can take is to prevent lead exposure before it occurs. Half a million US children have blood lead levels 5mcg/dl or higher, the reference level at which the CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.  A simple blood test can detect lead levels early so measures can be taken to prevent permanent damage that will last a lifetime.

Niagara County Department of Health collaborating with county hospitals to offer FREE mammograms to

During the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, hospitals throughout Niagara County will be offering FREE breast cancer screening to uninsured women.  Each hospital will provide FREE mammograms for women age 40-64 who do not have health insurance.  This is being done in collaboration with the Cancer Services Program of Niagara County (CSP), a program of the Niagara County Department of Health.

USDA Begins 2013 Oral Rabies Vaccine Efforts in Eastern United States

The US Department of Agriculture has begun its oral rabies vaccine (ORV) initiative in the Eastern United States to control rabies in wildlife. “It is important to note that the Niagara-Erie aerial portion of the drop will begin on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, depending on weather conditions,” announced Mr. James Devald, Environmental Health Director.

Rodent Control Tips
