World Tuberculosis Day is March 24th – a time to promote awareness about the disease.  Tuberculosis (TB) is spread through the air by people who are sick with TB disease. Each year, about nine million people become sick with TB disease and over one million die from it. TB continues to present challenges.  People travel the world more freely leading to its spread, and drug resistant TB makes achieving a cure more of a challenge. Since 2008, Niagara County has averaged about 3 cases of TB disease per year.

Niagara County Department of Health Reports Tobacco Sales to Minors Violations

The Niagara County Department of Health Environmental Division and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office (under contract with the Department of Health) have been conducting tobacco compliance checks throughout Niagara County since July 1, 1999. Every facility that sells tobacco to the public receives compliance checks to identify illegal sales to minors, including all vending machine operations. Under the supervision of an adult, compliance checks are conducted by 15 and 16 year olds who attempt to purchase tobacco products without identification while being truthful about their ages.
