LOCKPORT, NY— Niagara County announced this week that it has implemented a new web-based civil service examination application process.

The new web portal allows prospective employees to fill out civil service examination applications via the internet. The new web portal replaces the hardcopy paper applications used in the past.

“We are excited to bring this process into the 21st Century,” stated Niagara County Legislator Randy Bradt, R-North Tonawanda. “This will cut down on paper handling, filing, postage, storage space, etc. The process will be streamlined for everyone involved.”

“Once a prospective employee creates their initial ‘Master Record,’ each future application will take only 2-3 minutes,” said Peter Lopes, Director of Human Resources. “In our old system each exam required another complete paper application. It was time consuming and repetitive for the applicant, plus a mountain of paper for the department. Now applications flow electronically, responses are generated via e-mail in minutes as opposed to days, and all the filing is done automatically. This system is a big win for everyone.”

“Another key feature for our candidates is the ability to set up e-mail notifications of exams as they are posted. Once a candidate sets this function up they won’t miss any opportunities,” noted Personnel Specialist Shelley Pfeil.

Candidates can fill in their applications from their home or at one of the several public access sites around Niagara County. “Each of the NIOGA libraries have volunteered to allow candidates to use their public access computers for those who don’t have access to a computer,” said Personnel Officer Malcolm Needler.  “It’s another example of the libraries truly serving their communities.”  The public can also use computers at Niagara County Employment and Training in the Trott Access Center or either of the Department of Labor sites in Niagara Falls and Lockport.

The new portal can be accessed from the Niagara County website, using the “Current Exams” option of the Employment tab.

If anyone has any questions or concerns regarding the new system, they can call Niagara County Civil Service at (716) 438-4071.
